Description

Oil on canvas, 52 × 35 cm — a forest brook. Rensburg’s paintings form a small, sparsely documented minority beside his etchings and drawings; an oil of this size rarely appears on the market.

This canvas counts as the artist’s best publicly reported auction result: at Sotheby’s Amsterdam in March 2011 it realised USD 6,462 against an estimate of USD 200–300. The figures have come down through a market aggregator and are not fully consistent internally — in the absence of the original auction result we treat them with caution — but they show how far an estimate and actual demand can diverge when scarce work surfaces.

Where Rensburg made his name as a topographical chronicler of towns, a canvas such as this shows his other register: the landscape as a motif in its own right.

Provenance: Sotheby’s Amsterdam, sale of 14–17 March 2011 (gallery documentation; aggregator record).
