Description

Colour etching of 1925 showing the fish market on the Oudegracht in Utrecht, with the Dom tower rising above the houses — one of the few works in which Rensburg employed colour etching as a technique in its own right, beside the hand-colouring he applied more often.

The motif was evidently close to his heart: Het Utrechts Archief holds both an etching and an early watercolour by his hand of the same view of the Vismarkt with the Dom. Utrecht is among the towns he recorded repeatedly; the archive alone holds 24 drawings and five prints by his hand.

The colour etching illustrates the technical breadth that characterises his printmaking: beside etching and drypoint, his skill encompassed aquatint, double-tint etching, vernis mou and à la poupée — techniques he had largely acquired on his own.

Provenance: documented through auction results (kunstveiling.be) — gallery documentation.
